The Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest 2026 (YDC) concluded with its grand finale on September 5, 2026, at CENTRESTAGE, Asia’s premier fashion event, part of the third Hong Kong Fashion Fest. Ten up-and-coming local designers showcased collections inspired by personal experiences and cultural narratives, ultimately vying for top honors. The event drew a celebrity-studded audience, including Will Or, elka@Lolly Talk, and others, who cheered on the finalists.
The judging panel, chaired by Katherine Fang, included VIP Judge Rok Hwang, founder and creative director of ROKH, and other industry luminaries. After careful consideration, four awards were presented. Tsui Ao Lung claimed the Champion title with his collection “The Tide,” inspired by a classic Cantopop hit. His work depicted the emotional ebbs and flows of a woman’s life, using artisanal materials and handcrafting techniques. Tsui expressed that the win came after an exhausting but rewarding creative process, noting that the competition helped him discover his future direction.
Cheang King Tung, Kenneth received both the Excellence Award and the Best Art Direction Award for his collection “NOSTALGIA,” which drew on the 1983 film Nostalghia and his memories of Hong Kong. His designs reflected themes of homeland and yearning, incorporating hand-dyeing and experimental materials to capture the city’s atmosphere. Cheang was pleased that his non-mainstream work gained recognition, affirming his creative path.
The “My Favourite Collection” Award, decided by public vote, went to Lam Chun Ni, Jenny for “The Old Si-Fut and New Chai.” Her collection explored Hong Kong’s workplace culture, translating sayings like “be humble” and “endure hardship” into design elements that captured the tension between conformity and rebellion among young workers. Lam thanked supporters, noting that the theme resonated widely.
VIP Judge Rok Hwang praised the contestants for their energy and the show’s blend of Hong Kong culture and creativity. He highlighted the winning collection’s emotional depth and dramatic presentation. Mentors Alex Po and Derek Cheng guided the finalists throughout the competition, offering industry insights.
In a milestone celebration, MINI HK, lead sponsor of YDC for ten years, invited nine alumni to design car wraps for its electric models, with the tenth design from the YDC 2026 winner. The collaboration emphasized individual expression, aligning with MINI’s “Express Yourself” philosophy.
