XJTLU Sees Surge in Indonesian Applications, Expands Double Degree Offerings

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is experiencing a significant surge in interest from Indonesian students, with undergraduate applications from the country reaching over 1,500 for the upcoming September intake, accounting for approximately 38% of total international applications. Indonesia has emerged as XJTLU’s largest international market, with around 700 Indonesian students currently enrolled, according to a media discussion held in Jakarta on June 24, 2026.

Professor Youmin Xi, Executive President of XJTLU, highlighted the university’s diverse and multicultural environment, noting that faculty members come from more than 60 countries and students from nearly 100 countries. “Our educational model focuses on how we can help students grow with agile thinking and a strong sense of wisdom,” Professor Xi said. The university’s curriculum integrates Western and Eastern perspectives, encouraging students to develop a wide range of skills and collaborate in advancing knowledge.

XJTLU offers over 100 degree programmes across disciplines such as science, engineering, business, finance, architecture, urban planning, languages, and culture, all delivered in English. Undergraduate students graduate with two degrees: an XJTLU degree recognised by China’s Ministry of Education and a globally recognised degree from the University of Liverpool. Postgraduate students receive a University of Liverpool degree, also recognised by the Chinese Ministry of Education. PhD programmes are available across all academic departments.

Alumni representative Tuty Julfa shared her positive experience, stating that XJTLU strengthened both her hard and soft skills essential for career growth, including interpersonal skills and perseverance. Tuty, now running a fashion retail business, emphasised the role of these skills in shaping her current success.

As part of its international expansion, XJTLU established an official representative office in Indonesia in 2024 and expanded its recruitment team in June 2026 to enhance services and outreach. The university has also built partnerships with leading Indonesian institutions, including Binus University, Universitas Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung, and Petra Christian University Surabaya, as well as collaborations with education agencies and international schools.

Professor Xi emphasised the university’s forward-looking approach to artificial intelligence, noting that XJTLU’s 20th anniversary this year marks a commitment to preparing students for a future working alongside AI. “From the first year, our students are introduced to what AI is, how to use it, and the ethics surrounding it. In the second year, they begin learning how to apply AI appropriately in subjects such as Mathematics, Engineering, and the Social Sciences. By the third year, they are supported by AI in conducting research,” he explained. The university’s philosophy is “X plus AI,” using AI to support and reshape education, not replace it. “As long as humanity exists, education will endure,” Professor Xi concluded.

With strong growth momentum in Indonesia, XJTLU continues to reinforce its role as a global gateway for young talents seeking world-class education and international career opportunities. More information about XJTLU is available at https://www.xjtlu.edu.cn/en.
