Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Secures $1 Million Milestone Payment from Bayer for Iodine Feasibility Study

Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) announced that it has achieved the first milestone under its non-dilutive Collaboration and Funding Agreement with Bayer AG, securing a USD $1 million payment. The agreement, dated February 10, 2026, focuses on developing a domestic source of high-purity iodine for use in contrast media drugs. Voyageur's Houston R&D team successfully proved its proprietary Mueller iodine extraction process, achieving laboratory production of 99.8% purity iodine from produced water in the Anadarko Basin. This technical confirmation led Bayer to approve the feasibility work plan and timetable, triggering the milestone payment.

With the initial $350,000 paid in March 2026 and this latest $1 million, Voyageur has received $1.35 million of the $2.35 million committed by Bayer. The remaining $1 million will be released upon completion of the FEL-3 feasibility study, which is expected to be conducted by Fluor Corporation once the pilot plant becomes operational. The transportable pilot plant is nearing completion and is scheduled for field operation this fall.

Brent Willis, President and CEO of Voyageur, emphasized the importance of this milestone: "It confirms that the feasibility work is advancing as planned and triggers the first major non-dilutive payment under the collaboration. This capital is expected to further accelerate our iodine supply strategy and move us closer to validating a reliable North American source of high-purity iodine for use in contrast media drugs."

The project aims to produce 1,000 tonnes of iodine per year, with a staged rollout beginning at 200 tonnes. Upon successful testing of the 200-tonne unit, Voyageur may deploy additional units and expand capacity. A central manufacturing facility would then process the iodine concentrate into USP pharmaceutical grade iodine for contrast drug production. This initiative is part of Voyageur's broader strategy to vertically integrate the contrast media supply chain, reducing reliance on imported raw materials and lowering costs.

Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) is providing engineering support, including thermodynamic modeling and project planning. The engineering phases will progress through FEL-2 (Concept Design) and FEL-3 (Basic Design), with expected durations of four to five months and seven to nine months, respectively. These phases will refine the design and cost estimates for the modular Field Unit and Central Hub architecture.

The global contrast media market is estimated at approximately $7.06 billion, according to Market Research Future. Voyageur's strategy includes near-term revenue from barium contrast sales and iodine sales under the Bayer collaboration, with longer-term potential from contrast drug sales. The company also owns the Frances Creek barium project, which it believes offers a superior natural source of barium sulfate for imaging products.

Willis added: "The Bayer collaboration, combined with technical support from Fluor, continues to strengthen the foundation for scalable domestic iodine production." Further updates are expected as the feasibility study progresses and additional milestones are achieved. For more information on the collaboration announcement, see the Yahoo Finance article.
