VolitionRx Limited (NYSE American: VNRX), a multinational epigenetics company, has signed a nonbinding letter of intent with Denmark-based Missionpharma A/S to explore the development and global commercialization of its prototype lateral flow technology for detecting NETosis, a process associated with inflammation. The collaboration will initially focus on evaluating the finger-prick diagnostic test for neonatal sepsis, with potential applications in low- and middle-income countries and humanitarian emergency settings.
The agreement matters because neonatal sepsis remains a leading cause of infant mortality in resource-constrained regions, where early identification and management are critical but often hampered by limited laboratory infrastructure. Volition's lateral flow test is designed to measure circulating nucleosomes and neutrophil extracellular traps as early indicators of hyperinflammation, and it could enable rapid, point-of-care diagnosis without centralized lab testing. The company recently reported that its lateral flow prototype demonstrated high correlation with its established automated Nu.Q NETs test in critically ill sepsis patients, lending scientific credibility to the approach.
Missionpharma, which supplies healthcare products to United Nations agencies, government health ministries and other institutions, could support low-cost manufacturing, clinical studies and distribution. That supply-chain and procurement expertise is significant: it could help Volition navigate the complex pathways for introducing new diagnostics into public health systems and humanitarian response, where affordability and ease of use are paramount. For Volition, the LOI represents a step toward validating a complementary, lower-cost version of its Nu.Q platform that is suitable for decentralized settings.
