Vi Wickam Exposes Costly Google Ads Myths That Drain Entrepreneur Revenue

Entrepreneurs relying on Google Ads may be losing millions due to hidden commissions, misleading reporting, and platform incentives that prioritize spending over results, warns Vi Wickam, partner at Wizard of Ads Online, in a candid podcast episode released June 12, 2026. Wickam, who manages roughly half a million dollars a month in Google Ads spend across North America, joined host Don Williams on The Proven Entrepreneur to debunk common digital marketing myths and offer actionable advice for business owners.

Wickam's central warning is that many agencies blend brand and non-brand keywords in reporting, allowing them to claim credit for conversions that the brand itself earned. "Separating brand and non-brand is critical to understanding true campaign performance," he said. He also revealed that hidden commissions of 10 to 25 percent on ad spend are common, urging founders to demand transparency: "If a Google Ads manager says that you pay me and I pay Google, run away." Wickam noted that even best-in-class tracking systems only capture 65 to 70 percent of conversions, making accurate attribution a challenge.

The conversation highlighted that Google's incentive is to increase spending, not improve returns. "Google's incentive is to get you to spend more, not to get you to convert more of that spend into revenue," Wickam told Williams, describing daily calls from Google reps pushing broader keywords and fewer exclusions. Williams, drawing on 40 years in direct mail and outbound call center lead generation, agreed: "Quality and quantity almost never rise together."

The discussion pivoted to brand trust as the ultimate compounding asset. Wickam noted that branded search leads deliver 25x to 100x ROI, compared with 3x to 5x on non-brand campaigns, because the customer has already chosen the company. "Trust is a bridge built gradually from both sides, destroyed in an instant," Williams said. Wickam and Williams also cautioned entrepreneurs to retain ownership of their domains, Google Business Profiles, and websites, warning of vendors who hold digital assets hostage.

Wickam described AI as a "10-80-10" tool that still requires human expertise on both ends—for setup and interpretation. He pointed listeners to his sites for diagnostic tools, emphasizing that small business owners must understand their data to avoid costly mistakes.
