Verizon Frontline has opened its second annual App Developer Challenge, inviting developers, engineers, and tech innovators nationwide to create mobile applications that help first responders operate more safely and efficiently. The contest, which launched on National First Responders Day, October 28, 2026, offers a $25,000 grand prize for the most impactful app concept. Submissions will be accepted through April 2, 2027, with three finalists presenting live at the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, D.C., during the week of May 18, 2027.
The challenge’s return follows a first year that produced solutions such as the winning AI-powered drone intelligence app, Apex Eye, created by Rian Karim. All three finalists from the inaugural competition joined the Verizon Frontline Innovation Program to further develop their solutions alongside public safety and industry partners.
“First responders face complex challenges every day, and providing them with innovative, mission-critical mobile tools is essential,” said Cory Davis, Vice President, Verizon Frontline. The competition unfolds in three phases: a call for entries from October 28, 2026, to April 2, 2027; judging and finalist selection by a panel of public safety experts and technology leaders; and the live finals in Washington, D.C., where the grand prize winner will be announced.
The initiative underscores Verizon’s broader commitment to disaster preparedness and community resilience. Anchored by the larger Community Disaster Resilience Initiative, the challenge and programs like the Verizon Community Disaster Resilience Innovation Accelerator work in tandem to help future-proof communities. Together, they ensure Verizon isn’t just responding to today’s emergencies but actively investing in the resilience technology of tomorrow.
