For over 14 years, United in Peace has been organizing monthly Peace Rides in Los Angeles, bringing together motorcyclists, low-riders, clergy, community leaders, and concerned citizens to promote unity and peace across neighborhoods, cultures, races, and faiths. These rides are more than just processions; they are designed to engage residents, encourage dialogue, and foster a sense of shared community.
The Peace Rides travel through communities, including areas that have experienced violence or division, distributing peace-oriented materials such as The Way to Happiness booklet and the Million Man March pledge. Participants aim to help people see one another as members of the same community, challenging perceptions that divide and taking meaningful steps toward peace.
At the conclusion of each ride, United in Peace hosts a Peace Festival where residents and participants gather to celebrate. The festivals feature performances in hip-hop, R&B, gospel, and local talent, described as "edutainment"—combining education, community engagement, and entertainment to connect people.
The Los Angeles Police Department supports the rides by assisting with safety along routes and neighborhood stops. Residents often come out to wave and show support, reflecting the growing familiarity of the Peace Rides in the communities they visit.
For over a dozen years, the United in Peace Foundation, a multiethnic and multi-faith movement, has organized these events. The organization reports distributing more than 70,000 copies of The Way to Happiness and reaching over 2.4 million people through the events and media coverage.
United in Peace points to encouraging changes in violence rates. An LAPD captain has noted that violent death rates in South Los Angeles decreased by as much as 40% over the same 14-year period. While many factors contribute to these changes, United in Peace believes its sustained efforts play a meaningful role.
Mayors and members of Congress have issued commendations recognizing the organization's efforts. United in Peace welcomes organizations and individuals committed to building safer communities, and nonprofits can apply to host booths at the monthly Peace Festival.
