UGI Utilities, Inc. announced on October 28, 2025, that it is intensifying its campaign against scammers who continue to target utility customers with increasingly aggressive tactics. Despite UGI's ongoing public awareness efforts, customers have reported losing money to scams that involve fraudulent online ads and impersonation of utility representatives.
The scammers create bogus online advertisements that often feature deceptive phone numbers or website addresses. These are designed to appear legitimate but instead connect customers directly to the scammers. The fraudsters are not limited to UGI customers; they pose as whichever utility the customer is trying to reach. Several UGI customers have called numbers from scam ads and been tricked into paying for service-related issues that do not incur a charge or were told they must pay a fee for UGI to investigate a possible gas leak. UGI emphasizes that it will never charge anyone to investigate a potential gas leak.
The scammers exploit the common practice of using search engines to look up utility contact information. When customers search for terms like “utility phone number” or “how to pay my utility bill,” sponsored ads may appear, which can be fraudulent. Once the customer is on the phone with the scammer, the scammer asks for account details—including name, phone number, and email address—under the guise of confirming the account. They then employ high-pressure tactics to demand payment, often through unusual methods such as prepaid cards or cryptocurrency.
UGI advises customers to protect themselves by knowing their utility’s official phone number and website. For UGI, the only authorized phone number is 800-276-2722, and the official website is UGI.com. Customers should use this number for any issue, including bill payment, account inquiries, and service problems.
UGI is also reaching out to law enforcement agencies to raise awareness about these scams and encourage them to alert the public. The company hopes that by collaborating with local authorities, it can reduce the number of victims. UGI’s Public Relations Manager, John Mason, is available for interviews to further explain the scams and how customers can protect themselves.
UGI Utilities, Inc. serves more than 760,000 customers as a natural gas and electric utility company. For more information, visit www.ugi.com.
