u-blox Enhances GNSS Timing Validation With Nanosecond-accurate METAS Time Service

u-blox, a global leader in positioning and short-range communication technologies, has announced the integration of Switzerland's UTC-traceable timing infrastructure into its GNSS test laboratory in Thalwil, Switzerland. This collaboration with the Federal Institute of Metrology METAS and Switch, Switzerland's national research and education network, provides u-blox with continuous access to a UTC-traceable reference, ensuring full measurement traceability for its GNSS timing receivers.

The significance of this development lies in the critical role of precise synchronization and validation in GNSS timing technologies. By bringing national time standards directly into its laboratory, u-blox can now validate new hardware and software releases in-house, eliminating the need for repeated access to external metrology facilities. This capability accelerates the development cycle and enhances the reliability of next-generation timing products.

The infrastructure leverages White Rabbit technology, an Ethernet-based synchronization method originally developed at CERN for large-scale scientific applications. White Rabbit enables sub-nanosecond synchronization over fiber-optic networks, and its adoption in industrial settings is growing. Through Switch's fiber-optic network, the timing signal is disseminated with nanosecond-level accuracy, allowing u-blox to perform long-term timing stability measurements over periods ranging from weeks to months against a stable UTC-traceable reference.

Samuli Pietilä, Director of Product Line Management, Timing and Infrastructure at u-blox, emphasized the importance of rigorous validation: "High-performance GNSS timing products depend on rigorous and traceable timing validation throughout the development cycle. This infrastructure allows us to validate and continuously improve GNSS timing receiver performance directly in our own laboratory against a UTC-traceable reference."

METAS operates Switzerland's national time standards and provides traceable time dissemination services. Jacques Morel, Head of the Laboratory Photonics, Time and Frequency at METAS, noted, "We are pleased to support u-blox with our time dissemination service. This collaboration demonstrates how national metrology infrastructure can support advanced industrial applications requiring highly accurate synchronization, timing precision, and traceable validation against UTC references."

The integration underscores the strength of Switzerland's precision technology ecosystem, combining national metrology expertise, optical timing infrastructure, and advanced GNSS timing technologies. With the timing infrastructure now operational, u-blox is poised to strengthen its development and validation workflow, ensuring its timing products meet the highest standards of accuracy and traceability. This move not only enhances u-blox's internal capabilities but also sets a precedent for how national metrology services can be integrated into industrial R&D environments, potentially influencing broader industry practices.
