Stonegate Capital Partners has initiated coverage on Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM), drawing attention to the company's evolving business model following its Pizza Hut divestiture. The investment firm's analysis, based on Yum!'s second-quarter 2026 results, indicates that the company's earnings are now more dependent on Taco Bell's domestic growth and KFC's international expansion prospects.
Excluding Pizza Hut, Yum! reported system sales growth of 7%, unit growth of 6%, same-store sales growth of 4%, and a core operating profit increase of 8% in the second quarter. These figures highlight the underlying strength of the remaining portfolio. Taco Bell remains the primary growth engine in the U.S., although a July food safety issue has created a temporary interruption. Stonegate notes that sales trends have improved from the July 18 low, online sentiment has returned to pre-issue levels, and brand-love measures remain intact, suggesting the impact is likely short-term.
KFC presents the largest long-term development opportunity, supported by attractive franchisee economics and significant international whitespace. In the second quarter, KFC opened 660 gross restaurants across 55 markets, achieving 7% unit growth. The division continues to target higher average unit volumes (AUVs) and same-store sales, with an estimated 20,000-unit whitespace opportunity. This expansion is expected to contribute to Yum!'s recurring royalty base.
The Pizza Hut divestiture is expected to generate approximately $2.3 billion in aggregate net proceeds, which Stonegate anticipates will be used for revolver repayment and substantial share repurchases. These actions, combined with continued unit development and royalty growth across the remaining portfolio, should enhance shareholder value.
