Standard Lithium (NYSE American: SLI), through its 55:45 joint venture with Equinor known as Smackover Lithium, announced unanimous approval from the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission (AOGC) for its Integration Application covering the Reynolds Brine Unit, the site of the JV's flagship South West Arkansas (SWA) Project. This decision finalizes a major regulatory milestone, ensuring access to the 20,854-acre brine production area while protecting mineral owners' rights and de-risking the project's resource base.
The SWA Project plans to produce 22,500 tonnes of battery-quality lithium carbonate annually beginning in 2028. The project previously received unanimous AOGC approval for unitization and a 2.5% lithium royalty—the first of its kind in Arkansas. The recent integration approval is a critical step that confirms the project's regulatory standing and resource certainty, which are essential for attracting further investment and advancing toward commercial production.
Standard Lithium is a leading near-commercial lithium development company focused on sustainable development of large, high-grade lithium-brine properties in the United States. The company prioritizes projects with high-grade resources, robust infrastructure, skilled labor, and streamlined permitting. Its flagship projects are located in the Smackover Formation, a world-class lithium brine asset in Arkansas and Texas. In partnership with Equinor, Standard Lithium is advancing the SWA Project in southern Arkansas and actively developing a lithium brine resource position in East Texas.
This approval underscores the growing importance of domestic lithium production for the electric vehicle and energy storage supply chains. By securing regulatory approvals early, the joint venture reduces project risk and positions itself to meet the anticipated surge in lithium demand. The decision also sets a precedent for future lithium brine projects in Arkansas, potentially streamlining permitting processes for other developers.
