Smartkem, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMTK) has welcomed an announcement from its proposed merger partner, Ferrox Critical Materials, that Ferrox is advancing an accelerated development program for the Tivani Project in Limpopo, South Africa. The program targets a working demonstration-scale processing circuit during the fourth quarter of 2026, marking a significant step toward production.
The revised pathway combines on-site ore preparation and wash-plant infrastructure with a toll-milling arrangement with a local South African operator. The demonstration program aims to produce an ilmenite concentrate grading approximately 56% TiO2 and a magnetite concentrate grading approximately 62% Fe, subject to commissioning, metallurgical performance, and final operating parameters.
Ferrox is advancing construction of a wash plant and related site preparation at Tivani while also issuing a purchase order to Sound Mining to optimize the project's open-pit mine plan, including mining sequences and production scheduling. The accelerated demonstration program is intended to establish operating data, product quality, and initial sales capability ahead of a larger permanent processing build-out, providing a potential bridge from the current development phase to larger-scale modular production.
This development is crucial for Smartkem as it prepares for a merger with Ferrox, which would combine Smartkem's expertise in custom electronic materials with Ferrox's critical minerals assets.
