SierrAfrica Diaspora Connect has announced its 10-day Heritage & Legacy Tour to Sierra Leone, scheduled for April 22 through May 1, 2026. Limited to just 30 participants, the tour aims to strengthen ties between the African Diaspora and Sierra Leone through a combination of cultural immersion, business networking, and community development.
Participants will engage in a business expo at Fourah Bay College, a fundraiser for Tasso Island, an artifact dedication ceremony, and documentary filming. The tour coincides with Sierra Leone's 65th Independence Day celebration on April 27. The experience includes visits to historical sites such as the ruins of Bunce Island, a former slave trading post, and leisure activities at Mozza Beach.
The tour is rooted in the shared history of the Gullah Geechee people, whose ancestors were taken from Sierra Leone's rice-growing regions to the southeastern United States and the Caribbean. This connection is central to the tour's mission of fostering economic and cultural exchange. Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs Nabeela Tunis has declared 2025 the 'Year of Ecotourism,' aligning with the tour's goals.
The Business Expo & Diaspora Investment Exchange, hosted at Fourah Bay College, connects global entrepreneurs with local leaders to encourage investment in agriculture, technology, tourism, and cultural industries. Each participant contributes to infrastructure improvements on Tasso Island, supporting clean water, solar power, sanitation, education, and internet connectivity. Tax-deductible contributions can be made via the tour's website.
A landmark dedication ceremony in Freetown will install artifacts at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park (HMFP) in Hilton Head, South Carolina, symbolizing a spiritual homecoming. These events will be documented in the film Bridging Freedom, which explores the cultural continuum between Sierra Leone and the Gullah Geechee corridor from North Carolina to Florida.
Participants will join national Independence Day celebrations, experiencing Sierra Leone's culture, music, and traditions. The tour is curated by SierrAfrica Diaspora Connect, an international coalition formed in 2022. Executive Director Marva Goldsmith described the journey as 'a historic journey of heritage, entrepreneurship, and renewal.'
A $300 tax-deductible deposit secures a spot and contributes to Tasso Island projects. Full itinerary and registration details are available at www.sierrafricanetwork.com.
