SCHOTT Pharma, a leader in drug containment solutions, is intensifying its climate action following the validation of the SCHOTT Group's updated climate targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The new framework, which includes SCHOTT Pharma's operations, introduces an absolute Scope 3 emissions reduction target, signaling a strategic shift towards value-chain-wide decarbonization.
The updated targets, which replace the previous "climate neutral by 2030" goal, maintain the existing commitment to cut Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 46.2% by fiscal year 2030 (from a 2019 baseline). Critically, they add a Scope 3 target: a 27.5% reduction in emissions from key categories such as purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy-related activities, and the processing of sold products. Reinhard Mayer, CFO of SCHOTT Pharma, emphasized that this change enables a more impact-oriented approach, prioritizing actions with the greatest emission reduction potential.
This strategic pivot underscores the company's commitment to aligning with the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C goal. By focusing on absolute Scope 3 reductions, SCHOTT Pharma aims to drive improvements in product design, supplier engagement, and process efficiency, tackling emissions where they matter most. The company has already taken concrete steps, such as sourcing Energy Attribute Certificates for renewable energy since 2021 and implementing an innovative membrane-based system for generating Water for Injection at its Swiss site, which significantly reduces natural gas use and improves water efficiency.
Collaboration across the value chain is central to this effort. SCHOTT Pharma works with suppliers and customers to lower emissions through renewable energy sourcing, material efficiency, and circular economy initiatives. Notably, innovations in low-emission glass melting technologies within the SCHOTT Group are expected to cut emissions from pharmaceutical glass tubing, a major contributor to the product carbon footprint. The company also evaluates suppliers' climate commitments and participates in initiatives like Energize and Alliance to Zero to support decarbonization across the healthcare sector.
