Schenk Nursing Home Abuse Law has named Justin Coffman, a Master's in Nursing student at Emory University, as the winner of its 2025 Fighting the Nursing Shortage Scholarship. The $2,000 award is granted to nursing students at accredited U.S. institutions who propose solutions to make healthcare more accessible for incoming professionals.
Coffman's winning submission identifies three critical failures in today's healthcare institutions: inappropriate staffing levels, outdated pay and benefits packages, and insufficient mental health resources to prevent burnout. He argues that addressing these pain points could stem the exodus of nurses from the profession. Notably, he cites recent reports indicating that new graduates are likely to leave healthcare within five years, underscoring the urgency of reform.
“Healthcare institutions must listen to nurses' concerns and address their pain points to become more appealing to the next generation,” Coffman wrote. His perspective is informed by his own experience as a nursing student and volunteer. Coffman is active in Nursing Students for Sexual & Reproductive Health, the National Student Nurses' Association, and the Graduate Nursing Student Academy, and he volunteers with a local animal shelter and Camp Sunshine.
The scholarship is part of the firm's broader commitment to supporting nursing education. “Justin's concise and passionate assessment of today's nursing shortage moved our staff,” said Rob Schenk, founder of Schenk Nursing Home Abuse Law. “We are proud to help him continue pursuing his degree and hope his dedication to improving the world leads to future success.”
