In the Southern California Wine Country region, community safety is emerging as a key driver of economic development. The region, encompassing Temecula, Menifee, Lake Elsinore, and southwestern Riverside County, is leveraging its reputation for safe streets and stable neighborhoods to attract businesses. According to Connie Stopher, Executive Director of the SoCal Wine Country EDC, safety is foundational for business growth, providing certainty in infrastructure, neighborhoods, and workforce investment.
Temecula, for instance, invests heavily in public safety, with a crime index of 123—nearly half the national average for similar-sized cities. Menifee reports violent crime rates below 9 per 1,000 residents, significantly lower than county and national averages. Riverside County's violent crime rate is approximately 65 per 100,000, more than 38% below the U.S. average. These statistics reinforce the region's appeal to businesses and their employees.
The SoCal Wine Country EDC argues that safety translates into tangible business benefits. First, it aids talent attraction and retention, as employees prefer safe communities where they can thrive. Second, operational reliability improves with fewer disruptions and lower security costs. Third, safety provides a site selection advantage, with regions that combine safety, quality of life, and business incentives creating a powerful narrative. Fourth, community safety strengthens the region's brand, attracting further investment in a virtuous cycle.
The region supports businesses through programs like the Business Assistance NOW Program, offering financial resources, training subsidies, and streamlined permitting. A dedicated site-selection portal, RivCoSites.com, provides real-time access to available properties and workforce data. Major transportation infrastructure links the region to Los Angeles, San Diego, and ports, benefiting sectors like advanced manufacturing, aerospace, life sciences, and cleantech.
Local business leaders echo the importance of safety. Diane Strand, Executive Producer of JDS Studio and founder of JDS Creative Academy in Temecula, noted that safety is crucial for families participating in creative programs. She emphasized that being in a city that prioritizes safety is vital when relocating or expanding a business.
Looking ahead, the SoCal Wine Country EDC will continue to highlight the intersection of public-safety investment and business growth. For firms exploring new sites or expanding, the message is clear: a region where community safety is a priority is a region where businesses can grow sustainably.
