Rockwood Motor Court Inducted into Historic Hotels of America

The Rockwood Motor Court in Springfield, Missouri, has been inducted into Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This recognition places the motor court among more than 300 historic hotels across the United States that are celebrated for preserving their historic integrity, architecture, and ambiance.

Lawrence Horwitz, Executive Vice President of Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide, said, "Historic Hotels of America is delighted to induct Rockwood Motor Court, a Route 66 rock masonry court built in 1929. We commend Rockwood Motor Court, Phyllis Ferguson and her husband Tim Phillips, along with their leadership team for the careful historic preservation work, stewardship and vision that will allow future generations of travelers to experience this unique historic destination."

To be selected for membership, a hotel must be at least 50 years old, be designated by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark or listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, and be recognized as having historic significance. The Rockwood Motor Court meets all these criteria.

The induction also celebrates the historic Route 66, which is preparing for its centennial in 2026. Known as the "Mother Road," Route 66 symbolizes the rise of the automobile and the freedom and mobility it brought. However, many elements of the road are lost annually. Destinations like the Rockwood Motor Court are among the few remaining sites that embody the cultural essence of the road, reminding future generations of the era when road trips dominated American consciousness.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has actively worked to revitalize Route 66 through grants, advocacy, and other efforts. The organization is proud to induct the Rockwood Motor Court into Historic Hotels of America in honor of its enduring connections to Route 66.

Built in 1929, the Rockwood Motor Court is a prime example of the early Route 66 tourist-court style, with cottages arranged around a central courtyard. In 1948, the wood lap siding was covered with giraffe-style masonry and sandstone façade, and the name changed to "Rockwood Motor Court." It has operated under that name for over 75 years. In 2019, an extensive restoration was undertaken by Ferguson and Phillips to provide authentic Route 66 lodging. Today, it is recognized as the oldest operating motel on Route 66.
