The car, known internally as the W186, represents the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz luxury before the 300SL gained fame, and was nicknamed the 'Adenauer' after German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, who used specially built examples. Competing with Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Cadillac, the 300C offered a blend of dignity and daring that appealed to global leaders and business elites.
Under the hood, the 300C features a 3.0-liter SOHC inline-six engine with twin Solex carburetors, paired to a 3-speed Borg-Warner automatic transmission. Its independent front suspension and coil-sprung rear swing axle deliver ride quality and handling reflective of Mercedes-Benz's cutting-edge design. The car's rare 'Strawberry' paint color, confirmed by the factory build sheet, sets it apart from the more subdued tones typically ordered for this model. Additional features include a full-length Webasto sunroof, chrome-on-brass exterior trim, and a meticulously preserved interior with original VDO instrumentation, chrome switchgear, a Becker Mexico radio, and original upholstery details.
'This 300C is a showstopper—not just for its presence and condition, but for its individuality,' said Ron Sturgeon, founder of the DFW Car & Toy Museum. 'It's rare to find a luxury sedan from the 1950s that feels both dignified and bold, and this car does exactly that.' With only 885 examples built in 1956 and a total production run of 1,432, the Mercedes-Benz 300C remains a highly collectible piece of mid-century automotive history.
