After years of dealing with broken plastic safety caps on star pickets, Anthony Burr, a former concreter, has patented a durable steel alternative that is now being shipped through Bunnings Warehouse stores across Australia. The product, developed by Burr's company Safety Pickets, Inc., is set to launch in the United States, where it could address a longstanding safety hazard on construction, agricultural, and municipal job sites.
The idea for the steel cap came to Burr during a rainy Saturday job when he ran out of plastic caps and had to leave the site to buy more to ensure safety over the weekend. The plastic caps, which are designed to cover the sharp ends of steel star pickets and T-posts, often cracked in the sun, snapped off in the wind, and had to be replaced constantly, leaving exposed steel that posed a risk of injury to workers. Burr's frustration with this recurring problem led him to search for a better solution, despite initial skepticism from manufacturers. 'The first 10 to 15 people that I went to said, Oh, you can't do this; it's not possible,' Burr said. 'I thought, all right, well, I don't give up that easily.'
Burr eventually found a manufacturer willing to take on the challenge, and the first working version confirmed the concept's potential. The early design was bulky and required welding onto the post, but the current version is lightweight and presses directly onto the picket, eliminating the need for additional labor on site. The cap is made from high-strength low-alloy steel and is designed to eliminate sharp edges and injury risk, while also replacing a single-use plastic item that often ends up in landfills or as roadside litter. Safety Pickets has patented the design in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and the United States, and has secured a distribution agreement with Bunnings Warehouse, Australia's largest hardware and trade retailer.
With the Bunnings rollout underway in every Australian state, Burr is now turning his attention to the US market. He has been in discussions with contacts in Florida's road and infrastructure sector, indicating early interest from potential distribution partners. For Burr, the story behind the product is as important as the product itself. 'A tool built out of genuine, repeated frustration on a real jobsite, rather than a corporate research exercise, is what he believes will resonate with US buyers and partners,' the company said.
