The team behind the open-source AI agent project that gained viral attention as Clawdbot has announced its permanent identity as OpenClaw, concluding a rapid rebranding process that saw three name changes in 72 hours. The project's official web presence has moved from moltbot.my to openclaw.my, marking the end of what the team describes as a necessary evolution from a transitional phase to a stable platform.
The journey began in late 2025 with the launch of Clawdbot, a tool designed to run autonomous AI agents locally on consumer hardware. The project quickly became a sensation, particularly among developers who built dedicated home labs, spurring a surge in Mac Mini purchases. However, after a friendly suggestion from Anthropic's legal team regarding trademark similarities with its Claude AI assistant, the team decided to rebrand. On January 27, 2026, the community settled on Moltbot during a Discord brainstorming session. The name, referencing a lobster shedding its shell, symbolized growth but led to technical complexities and domain squatting issues, with fraudulent cryptocurrency tokens attempting to capitalize on the confusion.
Learning from the chaos, the team conducted thorough trademark searches and secured infrastructure before unveiling OpenClaw. The name combines "Open" to reflect the open-source mission and "Claw" to honor the project's origins. In a statement, the OpenClaw team explained, "In biology, 'molting' is a transitional phase—a vulnerable process of shedding a shell to allow for growth. Moltbot was exactly that: a necessary transition state. But one does not stay in the molting phase forever. You molt to emerge stronger, harder, and more capable. OpenClaw represents that final, hardened form."
The decision to rebrand twice quickly was driven by community feedback and compliance concerns. Following the shift to Moltbot, developers expressed a desire for a name that sounded more like enterprise-grade infrastructure. Additionally, OpenClaw has been vetted to ensure it can coexist with major industry players, making it safe for corporate adoption. Founder Peter Steinberger acknowledged the disruption, stating, "I will be the first to admit: changing a brand name three times in three days is not standard operating procedure. I apologize for the whiplash this has caused our contributors and users. However, in open source, we fix bugs fast—whether they are in the code or in the brand. We realized 'Moltbot' was a patch, not a platform. OpenClaw is the platform."
With the identity crisis resolved, OpenClaw is refocusing on its technical roadmap to democratize local AI automation. The project aims to allow developers to run powerful, self-improving agents on consumer hardware without relying on gated cloud APIs. The project is available at its new address, openclaw.my, and on GitHub at github.com/openclaw. Users are encouraged to update their bookmarks and CLI tools immediately.
