The 9th Goji Berry Industry Expo in Zhongning County, Ningxia, highlights the remarkable journey of the region's goji berries from a local specialty to a global health trend. Grown on the sun-drenched plains at the eastern foot of the Helan Mountains, Ningxia goji berries benefit from over 3,000 hours of annual sunlight and mineral-rich soils from the convergence of the Yellow River and Qingshui River. These unique conditions produce berries of exceptional quality, hand-picked and cultivated without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, according to Pan Tai'an, chairman of Ningxia Wolfberry Goji Industry Co., Ltd.
The cultural heritage of goji berries in China dates back millennia, with references in ancient texts like the Shennong Ben Cao Jing for their anti-aging properties. Today, this heritage has propelled Ningxia goji berries into international markets, where they are prized as a "superfood" for their high vitamin C content and antioxidants. Western researchers have studied their health benefits, including immune enhancement and anti-tumor effects, leading to demand in health supplements and cosmetics. However, the industry faced bottlenecks: the perishability of fresh berries and lack of deep-processing technology. Ningxia Wolfberry invested six years in R&D to develop ambient-temperature preservation technology for goji puree, a world-leading innovation that preserves nutrients like goji polysaccharides and zeaxanthin. This breakthrough has produced over 100,000 tons of goji puree, with sales exceeding 2 billion yuan, and driven the construction of 50 high-standard production lines across Ningxia, shifting the industry from raw material sales to high-value manufacturing.
E-commerce leader Ningxia Qilixiang Goji Co., Ltd. has further transformed the consumer perception of goji berries. Founded by three university students, the company now has annual sales over 1 billion yuan, offering innovative blended purees like goji-ginseng and red date-goji, with attractive packaging. Operating about 200 online stores, it consistently ranks first in e-commerce sales for goji products. These high-value products, including goji seed oil and juice, are now in global demand, becoming staples for middle-class families from New York to London and ingredients in premium restaurants worldwide.
To meet stringent international standards, Ningxia companies adhere to rigorous organic certifications. Ningxia Wolfberry has held organic certifications from North America, the European Union, and Japan for 21 consecutive years, exporting to 33 countries. The industry is now diversifying into tourism and culture, with goji art galleries, history museums, and experience centers, moving from "selling products" to "selling scenery" and "selling culture." This transformation reflects the broader rise of Chinese products and brands, driven by technology, creativity, and culture, showcasing the modernization of traditional agriculture and the innovative drive of China's real economy.
