A new Florida law effective July 1, 2025, delivers harsher penalties for drivers who speed excessively, according to a press release from The Andres Lopez Law Firm in Coral Springs, FL. Drivers traveling 50 mph or more over the posted speed limit, or driving 100 mph or more regardless of the limit, now face tougher consequences.
First-time offenders face up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine. Second offenders may be sentenced to up to 90 days in jail and fined $1,000. For three or more violations within five years, license suspension of up to one year, longer jail sentences, and higher fines apply. The penalties may also depend on traffic conditions and officer discretion.
From 2017 to 2023, 123 citations were issued for driving 50 mph or more over the limit. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that over 16,000 serious traffic accidents were caused by excessive speeding, resulting in over 170 fatalities and nearly 500 severe injuries. Lieutenant Indiana Miranda of the FHP noted that most citations for speeds over 100 mph occur overnight, with midnight units using lasers to enforce limits.
Local personal injury lawyer Andres Lopez applauded the legislation, stating it aims to improve safety on Florida highways and reduce fatalities and grievous injuries from high-speed collisions. The law is expected to deter dangerous driving and enhance road safety across the state.
