NanoViricides Advances NV-387 Toward Phase II Trials for MPox and Other Viral Diseases

NanoViricides, Inc. (NYSE American: NNVC) has announced continued progress in the development of its broad-spectrum antiviral candidate NV-387, targeting multiple viral diseases. In its quarterly report for the period ended March 31, 2026, the company highlighted that it has obtained regulatory approval to initiate Phase II clinical development for MPox in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Additionally, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted orphan drug designation for measles subsequent to the quarter, with further applications pending for MPox and smallpox.

The company's orphan-first regulatory strategy aims to expedite development for diseases with unmet medical needs. NV-387 is designed as a nanoviricide, a proprietary nanomaterial that attacks viruses directly. According to the press release, the drug candidate is being evaluated for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), COVID-19, Long COVID, influenza, and other respiratory viral infections, in addition to MPox, smallpox, and measles. The company believes that NV-387's broad-spectrum activity could address significant gaps in antiviral therapy.

NanoViricides also noted that it is developing NV-CoV-2 (API NV-387) and NV-CoV-2-R, which encapsulates remdesivir. The company states that since remdesivir is FDA-approved, the combination candidate may have a clearer regulatory path if safety is comparable. However, typical drug development risks remain, including the need for substantial capital and uncertainty in clinical outcomes.

The company's technology is based on the TheraCour nanomedicine platform, licensed from TheraCour Pharma, Inc. NanoViricides holds exclusive licenses for several antiviral indications, including HIV, hepatitis B and C, rabies, herpes, influenza, dengue, and coronaviruses. The company intends to expand its license to cover RSV, poxviruses, and enteroviruses pending research results.
