MelGeek Centauri Series Review: A Premium Hall Effect Custom Keyboard Bridging Gaming and Enthusiast Worlds

MelGeek has announced the Centauri60 and Centauri80, a new flagship keyboard series that aims to bridge the gap between gaming-oriented magnetic keyboards and enthusiast-grade custom builds. The keyboards feature Hall Effect switches, an interactive OLED touchscreen, and a focus on sound quality and build reliability.

At the heart of the Centauri series is a nearly 2-inch OLED display with 325 PPI and a 60Hz refresh rate, driven by a dedicated display processor that does not tax the keyboard's main microcontroller. This ensures smooth animations and instant responsiveness when switching configurations or triggering gestures. MelGeek has implemented a Layered Control Architecture: the first layer allows for aesthetic wallpaper settings, while the second layer provides a Core Status Dashboard for functional settings, including active configuration profiles and programmable virtual keys.

Adjacent to the screen is a "Super Dock" knob that can adjust volume, switch songs, change lighting effects, or execute one-touch commands. The integration of knob and screen aims to facilitate quick operation during typing or gaming.

Under the hood, the Centauri employs a distributed system with one master and five slave chips, each processing data for its own zone to improve efficiency and responsiveness. Intelligent dynamic scanning technology adapts to typing habits, speeding up response during rapid input and conserving power when idle. The fourth-generation Hall effect sensor, part of the Magic Magnetic Structure, boasts low signal jitter. Patented technologies include Anti-Interference Magnetic Shielding to reduce cross-key noise and a Water Ingress Alert system that monitors the PCB and activates an alarm if liquid is detected.

The typing experience is a key focus. A five-layer sound system and flexible gasket mount ensure a soft keystroke with a solid sound. The Centauri80 offers a deeper, resonant tone, while the Centauri60 provides a crisper, more focused pitch. The TTC Flip King magnetic white switches deliver smooth pressing and firm feedback. The lighting is a soft, three-sided surround effect with 16 million colors and customizable zones, designed to complement the OLED display without causing discomfort.

MelGeek's Hive software suite unifies control over the OLED interface, lighting, macros, switch functions, and Super Dock controls, with an intuitive layout that avoids deep submenus. The brand, founded in 2014, emphasizes balancing design, construction, and advanced features, aiming to create keyboards that serve as both tools and desktop companions.
