LION Smart Production GmbH, a subsidiary of LION E-Mobility AG, has won three additional stationary battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Germany, each with a capacity of 10 MWh, for a total of 30 MWh. The projects, announced in the third quarter of 2026, are scheduled for grid connection in the first quarter of 2027 and underscore the company's expanding role in the stationary storage market. The wins follow previous successes and come as LION Smart prepares to launch a "BESS as a Service" offering for operators of photovoltaic and wind farms. The development matters because it demonstrates the maturing business case for battery storage in Europe, where the integration of renewables requires flexible capacity to balance supply and demand.
The three projects represent distinct applications: one 10 MWh system will be co-located with an existing photovoltaic plant, another will pair storage with a new solar installation, and a third is a standalone storage project. This diversity illustrates the versatility of stationary storage, which can enhance renewable generation through co-location or provide grid services independently. As a system integrator, LION Smart designs tailor-made solutions covering consulting, system design, engineering, integration, commissioning, and maintenance. Each container is approved by an in-house engineering team according to European quality standards, and the company backs its systems with performance guarantees. Such end-to-end capabilities are increasingly important as utilities, independent power producers, and municipal utilities seek reliable partners for complex storage projects.
Beyond project wins, LION Smart is planning to introduce "BESS as a Service," a model that allows photovoltaic and wind farm operators to use battery storage without upfront investment in the asset. The service is designed to create additional revenue streams from storage while LION Smart assumes technical risk and provides maintenance. This approach could lower barriers to entry for renewable operators, accelerating the deployment of storage capacity that is critical for grid stability and the energy transition. The company will present the offering at the Solar Plus Forum in Berlin on 24–25 November 2026, where interested parties can learn more about its potential applications.
The strategic moves position LION Smart to capitalize on strong customer interest from independent power producers, solar and wind plant operators, traditional utilities, and municipal utilities. With its 5 MWh container solution and extensive development, testing, and simulation expertise, the company offers a technically mature, service-oriented solution for industrial and grid-connected large-scale storage. As Germany continues to expand renewable energy, the ability to integrate storage efficiently will be a key factor in achieving climate goals and ensuring grid reliability. LION E-Mobility AG, listed on the Munich, Frankfurt, and Hamburg stock exchanges, continues to focus on customized lithium-ion battery packs for electric vehicles and stationary applications.
