LION E-Mobility Expands BESS Business with Two Key Hires

LION Smart Production GmbH, part of LION E-Mobility Group, is expanding its stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS) business and has appointed two internationally experienced experts. Winfried Wahl will serve as Head of BESS Strategy, while Sebastian Bujnoch will take on the role of Manager Business and Sales Development, focusing on international supplier relationships and customer development across Europe. This personnel expansion underscores the strategic importance of BESS as a key growth pillar for the company.

Stationary energy storage systems are critical for integrating renewable energy, stabilizing power grids, and enabling future-proof energy supply concepts. LION Smart aims to develop high-performance, scalable, and market-oriented storage solutions to contribute to further electrification and the energy transition.

Winfried Wahl brings over 18 years of experience in developing markets for photovoltaic systems and stationary energy storage solutions. A graduate electrical engineer from RWTH Aachen University, he has expertise across the entire value chain, from technology and product positioning to market entry strategies and international partner networks. In previous roles, he helped shape the European market entry of companies such as Hithium and LONGi, and contributed to developments like the BNEF Tier 1 listing and reinsurance eligibility through Munich Re. He also co-authored the IEA World Energy Outlook Special Report 2024 and serves as a jury member of PV Magazine. Since June 2026, Wahl has been responsible for strategic development of the BESS business at LION Smart in Garching, focusing on refining strategic positioning, developing competitive product models, and expanding partnerships.

Sebastian Bujnoch complements the BESS team with extensive international leadership experience in manufacturing, operations, and the battery sector. His career spans strategic and operational responsibilities in complex international markets, with particular focus on China and Asian manufacturing markets. Over 16 years, he gained deep insights into industrial scaling, supply chain structures, and cross-border collaboration, combining European innovation capabilities with Asian production expertise. At LION Smart, Bujnoch will focus on building and scaling the BESS business unit, strengthening relationships with Chinese suppliers, and broadening the customer portfolio in Europe.

“With Winfried Wahl and Sebastian Bujnoch, we are gaining two individuals who combine strategic market insight, international experience, and operational execution capabilities in an ideal way,” said Dr. Joachim Damasky, CEO of LION E-Mobility AG. “Their expertise will play an important role in systematically building our BESS business and positioning LION Smart as a strong partner in the European energy storage market.”

By expanding its BESS team, LION Smart is strengthening its capabilities in a dynamically growing market. The company operates highly automated module assembly lines at its production facility in Germany and offers customized plug-and-play solutions for electric vehicles, stationary, and industrial applications. Its 5 MWh container solution and immersion-cooled battery system are among its cutting-edge technologies. For more information, visit www.lionemobility.com.
