JPMorgan Deploys JPM Coin on Ethereum Mainnet, Expanding Institutional Blockchain Payments

JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) has technically deployed its JPM Coin deposit token on the Ethereum mainnet, allowing eligible institutional clients to transfer funds within seconds, around the clock. The token represents U.S. dollar deposits held at JPMorgan, according to an Oct. 19 report by Ezra Reguerra and Yohan Yun of Cointelegraph.

Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs, said crypto companies could use the token for blockchain payments, while financial institutions could use it to settle trades and post collateral. Landriault said Ethereum was selected for its liquidity and existing use among clients, while JPM Coin transactions will remain restricted to approved institutional participants.

The move matters because it places a bank-issued deposit token on the largest public smart-contract network, potentially bridging traditional banking and decentralized finance for institutional users. By settling trades and posting collateral on Ethereum, JPMorgan could reduce settlement times and counterparty risk for clients already active in digital assets. The expansion follows the November 2025 launch of JPM Coin on Coinbase’s Base network, an Ethereum layer-2 blockchain, and JPMorgan also announced plans in January 2026 to introduce the token on the Canton Network, extending its support for institutional payments and asset settlement across multiple blockchain networks.

The Ethereum deployment signals that major banks are moving beyond pilot programs toward production-grade blockchain infrastructure. JPMorgan’s decision to restrict access to approved institutions may also shape how regulators view deposit tokens, as the bank balances innovation with compliance. The token’s design as a representation of U.S. dollar deposits could offer a template for other lenders seeking to tokenize deposits without issuing stablecoins.
