Japan Creator Support Fund Reports Tangible International Outcomes Across Creative Industries

The Japan Creator Support Fund, a government-backed initiative now in its third year, is producing measurable international results, as reported at the "Japan Creator Support Fund Progress Report Meeting" held on June 5, 2026, at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Tokyo. Supported projects have generated activity across 23 countries and regions, including selections at major film festivals, performances at renowned venues, and new cross-border partnerships.

Vice Minister Shigeki Kobayashi opened the meeting, emphasizing that "creators and artists themselves are the source of compelling content," underscoring the government's commitment to sustained investment in creative talent and international exchange. The Japan Arts Council provided an overview, reporting that FY2025 achievements included selections at the Berlin International Film Festival, Cannes Directors' Fortnight, and Annecy International Animation Film Festival, as well as performances at London's Royal Opera House and international touring projects.

Four organizations presented their projects. The Japan Performing Arts Solidarity Network introduced the SOIL Fellowship Program, which sent participants to pitching events in London and Edinburgh to enhance the global presence of Japanese theatre. Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre presented TMT Gear, which included on-the-job training during overseas performances and 8K recording initiatives. KINEMA CIRTUS reported on the Global Anime Challenge, providing internships at overseas animation studios. Jikei Gakuen School Corporation introduced the Immersive Media Lab++, an immersive content creator program developed with XR company STYLY, which plans to launch year-round courses in FY2026.

Key FY2025 results from the Creator & Artist Development Support Program include 544 creators supported, 165 overseas performances, and participation in 23 countries. The Support Program for Cultural Facilities Function Enhancement supported 133 creators and generated 92 domestic events with nearly 1.9 million attendees across eight countries. The Creator Support Program facilitated overseas study visits to approximately 15 countries, including African nations.

Notable international successes include the National Ballet of Japan's performances of Giselle at the Royal Opera House, leading to the company being named Outstanding Company at the UK's National Dance Awards 2025. Shochiku's kabuki production How an Onnagata Is Made undertook its first European tour in eight years, performing in Paris, Rome, and Cologne. In film, Hanarokushō ga Akeru Hi ni was selected for Competition at the Berlin International Film Festival, while Eri was selected for Directors' Fortnight at Cannes.

Looking ahead to FY2026, upcoming activities include presentations at the Beitou Art Festival in Taiwan, performances in Slovakia, and an exhibition by Syuto Kanazawa in Venice. The fund's website provides updated information on selected organizations and events at https://creator.ntj.jac.go.jp.
