International Healthcare Week to Showcase Hong Kong as Medtech and Investment Hub

The fifth edition of International Healthcare Week, organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), will take place from 11 to 31 May in Hong Kong. The event includes two flagship gatherings: the sixth Asia Summit on Global Health (ASGH) and the 17th Hong Kong International Medical and Healthcare Fair, both designed to underscore Hong Kong's position as a leading medical technology and investment hub in Asia.

The ASGH, jointly organized by the Hong Kong SAR Government and HKTDC, will be held on 11 and 12 May, while the Medical Fair, organized by HKTDC and co-organized by the Hong Kong MedTech Association, runs from 11 to 13 May. Both events will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, creating a comprehensive platform covering the entire medical and healthcare industry chain, from technology R&D to investment matching and medical equipment manufacturing.

Sophia Chong, Executive Director of HKTDC, emphasized the strategic importance of the events. "The medical and healthcare landscape is undergoing rapid transformation. Hong Kong, leveraging its status as an international financial centre, world-class research ecosystem, and unique position bridging the Chinese Mainland and the world, serves as an ideal platform for scientific excellence, strategic investment, and international trade," she said. The events will focus on high-growth areas such as biopharmaceuticals, AI-empowered healthcare, the silver economy, and modernization of traditional Chinese medicine, aligning with the National 15th Five-Year Plan's health priorities.

The ASGH, themed "Fuelling Healthcare Breakthroughs," will feature a prestigious lineup of speakers, including 2013 Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry, Professor Michael Levitt. The opening session will include remarks from Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee and Professor Zeng Yixin, Vice Minister of the National Health Commission of China. Plenary sessions will address pandemic preparedness and cross-sector collaboration to accelerate commercialization of research outcomes.

A key highlight is the Dialogue with Global Pioneer in Health session on the first afternoon, where Professor Levitt will share insights on the transformative impact of technology on healthcare. Additionally, the summit introduces a dedicated CSO Insights session for chief scientific officers to discuss R&D strategies and partnerships.

Thematic sessions will address market trends and the National 15th Five-Year Plan, including AI in healthcare, the silver economy, and traditional Chinese medicine innovation. The Silver Health Chapter will explore opportunities in ageing demographics, while sessions on China's healthcare industry and TCM development will align with national policies.

Beyond sessions, the ASGH will feature the ASGH Business Hub and InnoHealth Showcase, presenting innovations from some 180 companies across 11 countries and regions. The Project Pitching session and ASGH Deal-making facilitate connections between startups and investors. The "GoGlobal Connect" Zone and Business of Healthcare Advisory Zone offer professional advice for overseas expansion.

The Medical Fair, themed "Innovations Boosting Smart Health Experience," will gather around 300 exhibitors from 10 countries and regions. It focuses on three key categories: MedTech, GeronTech, and Preventive Healthcare. Notable innovations include a smart health wearable watch integrating Chinese and Western medicine, an augmented reality surgical platform for orthopaedic surgeons, and a smart knee brace combining AI and wearable technology. The fair also includes over 50 themed forums and seminars.

The events adopt an "EXHIBITION+" hybrid model, with physical fairs from 11 to 13 May and online matching via the Click2Match platform from 4 to 20 May. International Healthcare Week, spanning 17 healthcare-related activities from 11 to 31 May, aims to promote innovation and investment exchange, solidifying Hong Kong's role as a regional medical innovation hub.
