Hong Kong Optical Fair 2026 Spotlights Smart Eyewear and Silver Economy as Industry Transforms

The eyewear industry is undergoing a fundamental transformation driven by artificial intelligence, demographic change and shifting consumer priorities, and the 34th Hong Kong International Optical Fair is positioning itself at the center of that shift. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and co-organised by the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association, the fair will run from 4 to 6 November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre under the theme "Bright Eyes • New Horizons", bringing together more than 600 exhibitors from 14 countries and regions.

The stakes are evident in the numbers. According to market research cited by the HKTDC, global AI eyewear shipments reached 8.7 million units in 2025, a year-on-year increase of 322%, while IDC reported smart glasses shipments of 3.566 million units in the first quarter of 2026 alone, up 130.1%. HKTDC Associate Executive Director Smilely Lam said the sector is entering a new era driven by technological innovation, sustainability and changing lifestyles, and that the fair aims to inspire the industry to explore emerging market opportunities and foster cross-industry collaboration. That framing matters because it signals Hong Kong's intent to remain a regional sourcing hub as eyewear moves from a purely optical product category toward consumer electronics and health devices.

The product mix reflects that convergence. Exhibitors will present smart eyewear with augmented reality, AI voice assistants, real-time translation, 4K recording and navigation functions, alongside progressive lenses, smart reading glasses, bone-conduction audio glasses and eye-care devices aimed at older consumers. Sports and performance eyewear and sustainability-focused manufacturing technologies are also on the agenda. The fair's five spotlight trends—smart technology, the silver economy, fashion and design, active lifestyles and sustainability—show how suppliers are hedging across multiple demand drivers rather than betting on a single category.

The event's international reach is substantial. The Brand Name Gallery will feature some 200 brands, and pre-registered buyers include retailers and distributors such as Capitol Optical of Singapore, Eyespace Eyewear of the UK, Grand Optik of Indonesia and Vision Plus of the US. A dedicated Visionaries of Style zone will cater to designer labels, while Korea's Daegu Health College makes its debut with a group of local eyewear companies.

Beyond the show floor, the fair carries an educational and professional-development role. The 24th Hong Kong International Optometric Symposium on 5 November, organised with the Hong Kong Optometric Association and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, will examine paediatric eye care, digital eye strain, dry eye management and collaborative care between optometrists and ophthalmologists. The 26th Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition will present its awards on opening day, with a new Technology Concept Award for students. Full event details are available on the fair programme page, and the symposium agenda can be found on the symposium page.

The fair will again use the EXHIBITION+ hybrid model, with the Click2Match platform running from 28 October to 13 November to arrange meetings, and the Scan2Match function on the HKTDC Marketplace App supporting on-site sourcing. For an industry navigating both a technology boom and an ageing customer base, the fair's value lies less in any single product launch than in giving buyers and manufacturers a shared view of where demand is heading. More information is available through the HKTDC Media Room, and the original release can be viewed on www.newmediawire.com.
