Harlow Payments Launches Personal Pledge for Discipline-First Growth in Fintech

Harlow Payments today announced the launch of a personal pledge focused on a timely issue affecting payments and fintech teams everywhere: growth that moves faster than the systems meant to support it. Founded in 2024 by leaders who previously helped build and scale EVO Payments through its $4 billion acquisition by Global Payments, Harlow was created with a clear point of view shaped by experience.

"The goal wasn't to start another processor," the team has said. "It was to build the one we wish existed when we were on the other side of the table." As payments platforms adopt embedded finance, AI tools, and rapid onboarding models, the cost of weak operational discipline is rising. Industry research shows that chargebacks are expected to exceed $40 billion globally by the end of the decade, while a small percentage of poorly vetted accounts drive the majority of operational losses. Studies also show that over 60 percent of merchants rank reliability and support above price, and that fixing operational issues after launch can cost several times more than addressing them upfront.

"Speed without structure creates drag," Harlow Payments noted. "APIs don't fix broken operations," the team added. "They just expose them faster." "A win that creates three future problems isn't really win." "If it doesn't feel right early, it won't feel better later." These lessons form the foundation of Harlow's new pledge.

The Harlow Payments Personal Pledge includes seven commitments: pause decisions when alignment is unclear, even under pressure; ask deeper operational questions before launch; prioritise long-term stability over short-term momentum; empower teams to say no without fear; default to facts over emotion during stress; own mistakes quickly and adjust systems, not people; and measure success beyond outcomes, including trust, execution quality, and sustainability.

"We didn't try to be louder," the team has said. "We tried to be steadier." The pledge is not limited to payments companies. Harlow also provides a do-it-yourself toolkit with ten actions individuals can take independently, such as writing down one decision that was rushed and identifying the guardrail skipped, reviewing one process that creates problems later, and replacing urgency language with clarity in one meeting this week. A simple 30-day progress tracker is also included, with weekly focuses like noticing where speed replaces structure and introducing one deliberate pause point.

Harlow Payments invites founders, operators, and professionals to take this pledge personally, use the toolkit, and share it with others. Building durable systems starts with individual discipline and deliberate choices. Operational discipline refers to the systems, behaviours, and decision frameworks that allow payment platforms and fintech teams to scale without breaking trust. It includes thoughtful onboarding, aligned incentives, accountability, and a focus on long-term stability over short-term speed. Harlow Payments believes these fundamentals are essential to building businesses that last.
