Hainan, China's southern tropical island province, has seen a surge in international interest following a strategic social media campaign aimed at promoting it as a world-class resort destination. The "Cool Hainan" initiative, launched by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province, has successfully put the island on the radar of travelers from key markets worldwide.
Since the beginning of the year, the campaign has published 56 travel-themed pieces of content across multiple social media platforms, amassing over 16 million exposures. The multilingual outreach, spanning Russian, Thai, Indonesian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, has reached an audience exceeding 52 million followers, targeting major inbound tourist source markets including Russian-speaking regions, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America.
The campaign broke from traditional promotional models by releasing seven themed series of Hainan tourism content, featuring practical travel guides and immersive on-site scenarios. These series showcased international branding labels such as "Cool Hainan," "Top Ten Hainan Tourism Icons," and "Cool Island." Monthly themes varied from high-end luxury getaways on the Sunshine Coast in January to Li and Miao ethnic Spring Festival customs in February, trendy surfing and aerospace study tours in March, water sports and wellness tourism in April, archaeological and rainforest adventures in May, rainforest self-driving tours and ethnic minority villages in June, and "Ten Signature Marine Tourism Routes" in July, with a single post achieving over 2.6 million impressions.
The content not only highlighted diverse landscapes and experiences—including bays, rainforests, folk customs, health and wellness, and sports—but also provided practical travel information such as visa-free policies for 86 countries, temporary permits for foreign driver's licenses, and shopping and duty-free/departure tax refund policies. This seamless integration of natural scenery, local intangible cultural heritage, and modern tourism consumption business formats has proven effective in engaging global audiences.
Global social media users have shown strong interest in traveling to Hainan, with many commenting to ask about specific details such as visa-free policies, dining, accommodation, sightseeing, and self-driving trips. Several users have stated they have added Hainan to their future travel bucket lists.
The campaign's success underscores Hainan's ambition to build an international image as a "World-Class Resort Island" and enhance its appeal as an inbound tourism destination. According to an official from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province, Hainan possesses tropical coastal tourism resources unique in China. Capitalizing on the policy dividends and openness advantages of the Free Trade Port, Hainan will continue to optimize its tourism service offerings for international visitors and foster a tourism consumption environment that meets international standards.
This initiative is a key component of Hainan's broader strategy to develop into an international tourism and consumption center, leveraging its unique natural assets and favorable policies to attract a global audience.
