GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX) has welcomed the launch of a new global mpox vaccine stockpile, a significant step toward ensuring timely and equitable access to vaccines during future outbreaks. The initiative, funded by Gavi and coordinated by the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision—which includes WHO, UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies—was announced on August 27 and is expected to begin operations later this month. This long-term mechanism aims to address the persistent barriers to vaccine access that were highlighted during the 2024 mpox public health emergency.
David A. Dodd, Chairman and CEO of GeoVax, noted the importance of moving from reactive outbreak response to sustained preparedness. "Equitable access requires more than having vaccines available after an outbreak begins. It requires durable procurement infrastructure, sufficient vaccine supply, and the ability to rapidly deliver vaccine protection where it is needed," he said. GeoVax is developing GEO-MVA, a Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA)-based vaccine candidate for mpox and smallpox, and is preparing to initiate a pivotal Phase 3 immune-bridging study in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company has completed key manufacturing, regulatory, clinical, and preclinical milestones, including the production of GMP clinical product and alignment with the European Medicines Agency's scientific advice for an expedited development pathway.
The new stockpile is designed to support sustainable supply and long-term global preparedness. WHO has identified securing a robust product mix and supporting market-shaping efforts as strategic objectives, underscoring the importance of reliable and diversified vaccine supply. GeoVax believes that additional qualified MVA vaccine sources can help expand supply availability and manufacturing capacity. "Creating a sustainable procurement mechanism is an important part of preparedness, but preparedness also requires sufficient and reliable vaccine supply," Dodd added. "Our objective with GEO-MVA is to contribute a reliable additional source of MVA vaccine capacity that can strengthen global supply resilience."
Beyond advancing GEO-MVA, GeoVax is pursuing next-generation MVA technologies, including MVA-X for potential single-dose protection, continuous-cell-line manufacturing for scalable production, and microarray-based delivery to simplify administration. These efforts aim to address broader barriers to vaccine access and deployment. As the stockpile infrastructure develops, GeoVax is engaging with government agencies and international organizations regarding future procurement requirements, positioning GEO-MVA as a potential strategic asset for global health security.
