Community leaders, elected officials, residents, and guests gathered for the unveiling of an honorary street sign dedicated to L. Ron Hubbard in Elizabeth, New Jersey, recognizing the city's role in the global Dianetics movement. The sign marks the location where Hubbard's book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health sparked a worldwide movement following its publication on May 9, 1950.
Guests traveled to Elizabeth to hear remarks from New Jersey State Senator Joseph Cryan, Elizabeth Council President Manny Grova, Jr., and Rev. Massimo Parrino, President of the L. Ron Hubbard Foundation. Councilman Frank Mazza and former Councilman Carlos Alma, who initiated the effort over 20 years ago, were among the distinguished attendees.
"Even though it's cold, the impact of L. Ron Hubbard on the world is clearly massive, because you are all here today in the City of Elizabeth celebrating his legacy," said Council President Grova, drawing cheers from more than one hundred guests.
Beginning in June 1950, visitors from across America and beyond traveled to 42 Aberdeen Road, where Hubbard had opened the first Dianetics Foundation. He delivered public lectures and demonstrations there, sharing principles aimed at personal improvement and the betterment of civilization. The book spent an unprecedented 28 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.
"It has been remarkable how you have grown in our community and how you brought us to the point we celebrate today," said State Senator Cryan. "As we unveil this sign, let us all raise our hearts to the understanding that we can, in fact, have a better world."
The unveiling follows the restoration of 42 Aberdeen Road in April 2025, which was meticulously returned to its 1950 appearance, inside and out, exactly as it was when Hubbard lived there. For more information, visit scientology.org/scientology-today/events/Aberdeen-road-grand-opening.html.
The L. Ron Hubbard Foundation, a nonprofit public benefit organization, is dedicated to preserving the accurate historical record of Hubbard's research and encouraging the application of his discoveries to address social and scientific challenges.
