Dr. Valinda Nwadike Scholarship Targets Future Physicians Committed to Maternal Health Equity

The Dr. Valinda Nwadike Scholarship for Medical Students has announced its annual call for applications, offering a $1,000 award to undergraduate students across the United States who are committed to addressing health disparities, particularly in maternal health and underserved populations. Established by Dr. Valinda Nwadike, MD, MPH, the scholarship aims to support future healthcare professionals who demonstrate both academic promise and a vision for reducing systemic gaps in care.

Dr. Valinda Nwadike, a physician, educator, and maternal health advocate, brings extensive experience in high-risk obstetrics, gynecologic surgery, and telehealth innovation to the initiative. Her work includes leading the Southern Maryland Black Maternal Telehealth Alliance, which expands access to prenatal and postpartum care. Through this scholarship, she seeks to encourage students to think critically about the social, geographic, and economic factors that influence patient outcomes.

To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. undergraduate program and pursuing a healthcare-related career, such as pre-med, pre-PA, nursing, pre-dental, or public health with clinical intent. The application requires an original essay of 600–800 words responding to a prompt that asks students to draw on their experiences with health disparities and explain how future medical professionals can use education, technology, or community partnerships to close gaps in care. The evaluation criteria include personal insight, feasibility of proposed solutions, alignment with Dr. Nwadike's mission, and writing quality.

Applications must be submitted by January 15, 2027, via email to apply@drvalindanwadikescholarship.com with the subject line "Nwadike Scholarship – [Full Name] – [University Name]." The winner will be announced on February 15, 2027. Dr. Nwadike emphasizes that selection is based on authenticity and clarity of vision rather than transcripts or financial need.

This scholarship addresses a critical need: maternal health disparities in the United States, where Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, and rural communities face limited access to obstetric care. By investing in students who are aware of these challenges and propose actionable solutions, the scholarship aims to cultivate a new generation of clinicians equipped to tackle systemic inequities.

Dr. Nwadike's own career reflects this commitment. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University, she has held clinical leadership roles across multiple states and developed programs that integrate telehealth into maternal care. The scholarship extends her mission by providing a platform for students to articulate their visions for equitable healthcare.
