U.S. Term Limits announced today that Dr. Ibraheem Samirah has agreed to serve as the Virginia State Chair for the organization. Dr. Samirah, a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates, will spearhead the push for a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on members of Congress.
"I am honored to serve as the Virginia State Chair for U.S. Term Limits," said Dr. Samirah. "Now more than ever before, the need for term limits is crystal clear. Polls show that one issue that unites all citizens regardless of political affiliation is the need for congressional term limits. Over 80% of Americans want congressional term limits enacted at once to bring true reform to our government and end the dysfunction of entrenched ways that we see in Washington, D.C. daily."
Dr. Samirah brings a combination of private and public service experience to the role. A dentist and business owner, he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2019 and quickly became known as a reform advocate, respected by members of both parties. He earned his B.A. in government from American University and a Doctor of Dental Medicine from Boston University.
"For many, serving in Congress has become a lifelong entitlement rather than a public service," Dr. Samirah added. "Term limits will help improve accountability, diversify Congress, and make government work better for all Americans. I look forward to working with the team from U.S. Term Limits to ensure that the Virginia legislature adopts a resolution calling for congressional term limits."
Philip Blumel, President of U.S. Term Limits, expressed confidence in Dr. Samirah's leadership. "We are honored to have Dr. Samirah leading our efforts in Virginia to pass term limits for Congress," Blumel said. "Under his guidance, I am confident we will get our term limits resolution passed in Virginia."
The appointment comes as U.S. Term Limits, described as the largest grassroots term limits advocacy group in the country, continues its campaign to pass term limits at all levels of government. The organization connects supporters with legislators and works to enact term limits, particularly on the U.S. Congress. Dr. Samirah, who resides in Herndon, Virginia, emphasized the broad public support for the issue. With over 80% of Americans favoring term limits, the movement has gained traction across party lines. His role will involve building support among Virginia lawmakers to pass a resolution calling for a constitutional convention to propose term limits, a key step in the amendment process.
The push for term limits reflects growing frustration with congressional dysfunction and the influence of long-serving incumbents. Advocates argue that term limits would bring fresh perspectives, reduce the power of special interests, and make Congress more responsive to the people. As Dr. Samirah takes on this role, Virginia joins a growing list of states considering similar resolutions.
