"The resin model is really where the guesswork disappears," Blackburn said. "You put it on your hand and you know." After approval, the ring is cast, set by hand, polished, and engraved, with production taking two to three weeks.

Blackburn, a second-generation jeweler with over 30 years of experience, leverages relationships with diamond cutters, wholesale suppliers, and estate specialists. For a natural diamond of comparable grading and size, buyers often spend 15% to 30% less than at a designer boutique. On stones over two carats, the difference can be thousands of dollars. Lab-grown diamonds can reduce costs even more, commonly costing only 5% as much as natural diamonds of similar quality, allowing clients to choose a larger stone or upgrade to platinum.
Custom work is not necessarily cheaper, but it allows clients to direct their budget toward the diamond, materials, and craftsmanship. Blackburn emphasizes, "Custom should not be thought of as the bargain version of a designer ring. The better question is what you receive for the same total investment." Custom design also enables projects like incorporating stones from family heirlooms or reconstructing damaged pieces.
