Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death among women in the United States, and projections suggest that nearly six in ten U.S. women will have some form of the disease by 2050, according to the American Heart Association. In response, women's college basketball coaches are coming together through the 2026 American Heart Association Go Red for Women Hearts on the Court Collective to raise awareness, educate women about their risks, and encourage them to seek care and support.
Led by Kim Mulkey, Louisiana State University's Hall of Fame women's basketball coach and NCAA championship winner, the Collective brings together coaches from across the country to elevate the profile of women's cardiovascular health. Throughout the 2026-27 season, these coaches will use their platforms to reach fans, student-athletes, families, and communities with lifesaving health information. The initiative matters because it leverages trusted figures in sports to address persistent gaps in awareness, diagnosis, and treatment that leave many women vulnerable to cardiovascular disease.
"Too many women still face gaps in awareness, diagnosis, treatment and lifesaving care for cardiovascular disease," said Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association. "By bringing trusted coaches and mentors into this effort, the American Heart Association Go Red for Women Hearts on the Court Collective can help deliver health and hope to more women everywhere." The Collective's messages will focus on Life's Essential 8 for Women, which includes managing blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar; eating healthy; staying active; avoiding tobacco; getting healthy sleep; and maintaining a healthy weight. The coaches will also highlight how cardiovascular risk can change across life stages, including adolescence, pregnancy, and menopause.
"Coaches understand the value of preparation, teamwork and taking action before the pressure is on," Mulkey said. "By coming together again, this Collective can help women know their risks, make heart-healthy choices and speak up for the care they need." The 2026-27 Collective includes coaches from prominent programs such as the University of Notre Dame, UCLA, University of Iowa, University of Texas, and many others. Their involvement amplifies the reach of the 2026 American Heart Association Go Red for Women Hearts on the Court Collective, which aims to inspire women to take charge of their heart health.
The implications of this announcement extend beyond the basketball court. With more than 80% of heart attacks and strokes being preventable, according to the American Heart Association, the Collective's emphasis on education and action could help reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease among women. By partnering with influential coaches, the Association hopes to reach women in every age and stage of life, urging them to learn their risks and take proactive steps.
