When Will Roman's back began to ache as he aged, he refused to give up his cowboy boots. A stubborn Texan, he tested countless brands, materials, and inserts, but none provided the combination of durability and comfort he needed. This search led to the founding of Chisos Boot Company in 2019. The Austin-based, family-owned bootmaker didn't simply add a cushion to a traditional boot; they engineered the entire boot around a comfort system. The result is a pair of boots that customers often say feels unlike any other they've worn.
The heart of the system is the removable Chisos comfort insole, featuring leather over a multi-density polymer with gel pads at the heel and ball of the foot. Roman spent months testing materials, rejecting memory foam because it loses its rebound after hours of standing. The insole is designed to provide lasting support and form to the foot's imprint. However, the insole alone isn't the story. Drop-in inserts fail when the boot wasn't shaped for them, so every Chisos boot is built with the comfort system in mind. The last runs larger, the heel counter is taller, and the vegetable-tanned leather footbed includes structured arch support, backed by a conformed steel shank.
Chisos emphasizes stability over extreme softness, which often feels good initially but causes the body to compensate. The company builds a stable platform with a firm heel counter, structured footbed, and a walking heel set at about an inch and a half, a practical range for walking stability. A wider toe box allows toes to remain side by side for natural balance adjustments. On hard surfaces, leather soles transfer impact, but the comfort insole dissipates shock without sacrificing the resolable leather build. Roman notes, "Changing your boots out is probably not going to solve back discomfort overnight, but it can make a big difference." While footwear cannot treat medical conditions, Chisos aims to improve daily comfort for those who spend long hours on their feet.
As the boots break in, the foot forms indentations into the insole and leather footbed, reducing micro-movements needed for balance. The boots don't peak on day one; they improve with wear.
