Children's Book Celebrates the Simple Joys of a Dachshund's Day

Mark Eggers's children's picture book, 'A Day in the Life of Root Beer (The Dachshund),' published by The Collingwood Press, is now available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. The book follows Root Beer, a dachshund, through a single day at home with Mommy and Daddy, from waking in his crate to the smell of coffee to falling asleep there again. In between, he eats breakfast, plays tug-of-war with his fox toy, rides to the park, answers a squirrel, stops for ice cream, and settles on the couch between Mommy and Daddy for the evening.

The story stays with the small routines of an ordinary day: banana slices and blueberries with breakfast, a ball nudged under the couch followed by barking until it is fished back out, Daddy asking him to step back from the dishwasher, and three circles in his favorite spot before he curls up against Dad's leg. The book is fully illustrated in color, with each spread moving to a new part of the day, from the kitchen and living room to the park, the ice cream shop, and the house at night.

Root Beer is Eggers's own dog. Eggers and his wife, Kathy, did not have a dog until they were 67. Root Beer, named for his coat color, has been with them for about five years. His title page lists a few of his other names, including Ninja Wiener, Rooty Beer, RB, Harry Houweenie, and Rootie Tootie. The book is dedicated to Eggers's entire family, 'who all have an opinion about Root Beer.' Eggers and Kathy have four children, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

The book's significance lies in its celebration of the mundane. By focusing on the small, repetitive moments that make up a dog's day, Eggers highlights the comfort and stability that pets bring to family life. For children, the story offers a relatable and reassuring window into daily routines, while for adults, it serves as a gentle reminder of the quiet joy found in ordinary companionship. The choice to feature a dachshund—a breed known for its distinctive shape and spirited personality—adds a layer of charm and humor that resonates with dog lovers of all ages.

Moreover, the book's publication comes at a time when many families are seeking wholesome, screen-free entertainment that fosters connection and empathy. By portraying Root Beer's interactions with his owners and his environment, the story subtly models positive pet care and the rewards of patience and affection. Eggers's decision to write about his own dog underscores the authenticity of the narrative, making it a personal tribute that readers can easily embrace.

As a picture book, the vibrant illustrations are integral to the experience, capturing the energy of a playful pup and the warmth of a loving home. Each page invites readers to linger over details, from the texture of Root Beer's fur to the familiar clutter of a lived-in house. This visual storytelling enhances the text, making the book an ideal choice for read-aloud sessions that spark conversation about daily habits, family roles, and the simple pleasures of life with a pet.

In a market saturated with fantastical tales, 'A Day in the Life of Root Beer (The Dachshund)' stands out for its quiet realism and heartfelt simplicity. It reminds us that the most meaningful stories often lie in the everyday moments we share with those we love—including the four-legged members of our families.
