Jesus “Malverde” Gonzalez, Vice President, Creative, Latin at BMI, has been named the 2026 ¡BRAVO! Pioneer of the Year by The Hispanic Public Relations Association (HPRA), an honor that underscores the growing influence of Latino executives in shaping the music industry and the importance of leadership that remains connected to community roots. The award, part of HPRA’s annual ¡BRAVO! Awards, will be presented on November 19 at the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens, marking HPRA’s return to the city where it was founded 42 years ago.
Gonzalez’s recognition matters because it highlights a career path that began not in a boardroom but as a recording artist and songwriter. A son of Coachella, California—one of the nation’s largest immigrant farmworker communities—and a lifelong Angeleno, Gonzalez performed his first BMI SXSW showcase in 2005, years before joining the organization as an executive. That lived experience as an artist informs his current role, where he oversees BMI’s Latin Creative team, helps sign and develop talent, and serves as a bridge between the Latin music community and the broader industry.
HPRA President Sonia V. Diaz emphasized that Gonzalez’s journey is exactly what the Pioneer of the Year award is meant to celebrate. “Jesus knows what it feels like to be the artist looking for someone to recognize your potential because he lived it,” Diaz said. “Today, he is in a position to open doors for other creators, and he has not just chosen to hold those doors open, but to lead the way.” That perspective is critical in an industry where Latino artists and songwriters have historically lacked access to decision-makers and resources. Gonzalez’s work—curating showcases, moderating industry conversations, hosting BMI’s annual Latin Awards, and developing initiatives to support BMI’s Latin roster—directly addresses those gaps.
His tenure at BMI has coincided with high-profile signings and retentions including Peso Pluma, Edgar Barrera, Bizarrap, Ryan Castro, and Alvaro Diaz, among others. Before joining BMI in 2021, Gonzalez spent nearly seven years at Universal Music Group, most recently as Senior Vice President of Brands & Partnerships, where he developed collaborations between Latin artists and global companies and helped secure partnerships for artists such as J Balvin, Juanes, and Luis Fonsi. He has also been named to Billboard’s Latin Power Players list for five consecutive years, from 2021 through 2025. This combination of commercial success and community commitment demonstrates that Latino executives can drive business results while expanding opportunity for others.
The timing of the award is significant as HPRA returns to Los Angeles, where a small group of Latino communications professionals founded the organization in 1984. Their goal was not merely representation but building networks, sharing access, and creating opportunities for one another—principles that remain central to HPRA’s mission. By honoring Gonzalez, HPRA reinforces that legacy in motion: taking what you learned, what you earned, and the doors that opened for you, and turning them into possibility for someone else. The award also brings attention to the 2026 ¡BRAVO! Pioneer of the Year celebration, which recognizes excellence in multicultural communications and the cultural fluency that moves the field forward.
For the music industry, Gonzalez’s recognition signals that the most effective leaders are those who understand the challenges of emerging creators because they once faced them. As Latino music continues to expand its global footprint, the executives who can spot talent, provide guidance, and advocate for representation become increasingly vital. Gonzalez’s story—from artist to executive, from seeking opportunity to creating it—offers a blueprint for how the industry can better serve the communities that drive its growth. The ¡BRAVO! Awards, since 2014, have honored leaders across communications, journalism, entertainment, and culture, including Maria Hinojosa, Maria Elena Salinas, and Enrique Santos. Gonzalez now joins that list, not only for his professional achievements but for the doors he continues to open for others.
