BioLumic Expands Light-Activated Seed Trait Platform to South America

BioLumic, the agricultural biotechnology company that uses light to program heritable seed traits, has announced its expansion into South America. The company's Corn xTraits™ Licensing Program will now include early-stage evaluations with GDM, a collaboration with Tropical Melhoramento & Genética (TMG), and regional seed production and nursery engagement with Gro Alliance. This move builds on the company's strong partnership and commercial momentum in the United States and follows BioLumic's plan to create xTraits hubs in grain-producing regions worldwide.

The expansion includes multi-location field evaluations with GDM, TMG, and major grower Grupo Scheffer. These assessments will determine how BioLumic's light-activated seed traits perform within local genetics and growing conditions, creating a direct pathway to validate xTraits for farmers in the region. "Our partnership with BioLumic allows us to explore a novel approach to seed trait development that could bring significant value to Brazilian farmers," said a representative from GDM.

Year-round nursery work in Chile and upcoming field trials in Brazil during the 2026–2027 season will inform commercial launch plans. BioLumic expects a broader Latin America rollout within 12 to 15 months, with future expansion into soybean and ryegrass. The company's patented xTraits technology unlocks non-GMO genetic expression traits to enhance yield, composition, and crop resilience through a one-time, light-based seed application.

BioLumic, founded in 2013 and based in the U.S. and New Zealand, uses light signaling as a programming language for plants. Its traits are scalable, fast to develop, and easily integrated into existing seed systems. For more information, visit www.biolumic.com.
