International technology group ANDRITZ, in partnership with Slovak engineering firm VUJE, has been awarded a contract by VODOHOSPODARSKA VYSTAVBA to comprehensively modernize the Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant on the Danube. This facility is the largest hydroelectric plant in Slovakia and a central component of the national energy infrastructure, accounting for approximately 10% of Slovakia's electricity production. The project's significance extends beyond national borders, as it underscores the critical role of hydropower in Europe's renewable energy transition.
The contract, valued in the mid three-digit million-euro range, involves the comprehensive renewal and modernization of the plant's electromechanical equipment, which currently has a total capacity of 720 MW. This investment is aimed at improving the plant's efficiency and availability, while extending the technical service life of key operating equipment by at least 30 years. The modernization is a strategic move to ensure that the Gabcikovo plant continues to contribute reliably to Slovakia's energy mix, which is increasingly important as the country seeks to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance energy security.
The scope of work includes model testing, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning of modernized turbine and generator components, as well as automation, excitation, protection, and control systems. Additionally, the project will involve the renewal of transformers and auxiliary electrical systems. By upgrading these critical components, the plant will be brought up to the latest technical standards, ensuring optimal performance and sustainability for decades to come.
One of the key aspects of the project is its phased execution. The eight Kaplan turbine-generator units will be gradually refurbished, allowing the plant to maintain availability and minimize impacts on ongoing operations. This approach is essential for ensuring that Slovakia's electricity supply remains stable during the modernization period. The careful planning and sequencing of work demonstrate ANDRITZ's commitment to delivering high-quality solutions while prioritizing operational continuity.
The order has been included in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026, reflecting the company's strong position in the hydropower market. According to ANDRITZ, this project aligns with its broader strategy to support the global energy transition by providing sustainable solutions that maximize the value of customers' plants over their entire life cycle. As a global leader in technology and innovation, ANDRITZ is dedicated to fostering progress that benefits customers, partners, employees, society, and the environment.
For the Gabcikovo plant, this modernization is not just about upgrading equipment; it is about securing the future of clean energy generation in Slovakia. The plant has been a cornerstone of the country's energy infrastructure since its completion, and this investment will ensure that it continues to play a vital role in meeting the nation's energy needs while contributing to environmental sustainability. The partnership between ANDRITZ and VUJE brings together international expertise and local knowledge, ensuring that the modernization is tailored to the specific needs of the plant and the region.
Moreover, this project highlights the growing importance of hydropower in the global push for renewable energy. As countries around the world seek to decarbonize their energy systems, upgrading existing hydropower facilities is a cost-effective and efficient way to increase capacity and reliability without the environmental impact of new dam construction. The Gabcikovo modernization serves as a model for other nations looking to optimize their existing renewable energy assets.
In summary, the modernization of the Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant represents a significant investment in Slovakia's energy future. By enhancing efficiency, extending the lifespan of critical equipment, and ensuring reliable operation, this project will help the country meet its clean energy goals. With the combined expertise of ANDRITZ and VUJE, the plant is poised to continue its vital role in the region's energy landscape for many years to come.
