American Heart Association Responds to New Dietary Guidelines, Highlights Concerns and Opportunities

The American Heart Association (AHA) issued a statement today in response to the release of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, commending the inclusion of several science-based recommendations while also highlighting areas of concern. The AHA specifically welcomed the emphasis on increasing intake of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and limiting consumption of added sugars, refined grains, highly processed foods, saturated fats, and sugary drinks. These elements align closely with the AHA's longstanding dietary guidance.

However, the AHA expressed concern that recommendations regarding salt seasoning and red meat consumption could inadvertently lead consumers to exceed recommended limits for sodium and saturated fats, which are primary drivers of cardiovascular disease. Additionally, while the guidelines highlight whole-fat dairy, the AHA encourages consumption of low-fat and fat-free dairy products, which can be beneficial to heart health. The AHA also urged more scientific research on both the appropriate amount of protein consumption and the best protein sources for optimal health, and pending that research, encourages consumers to prioritize plant-based proteins, seafood, and lean meats while limiting high-fat animal products.

The AHA reaffirmed its commitment to working with the administration to reduce the burden of chronic disease, particularly for the next generation. Key priorities include advocating for policies to reduce sugary drink consumption, informing the development of an operational definition of ultraprocessed food, and promoting healthy dietary patterns. The AHA also highlighted its Dietary Guidance to Improve Cardiovascular Health and its recent science advisory on ultraprocessed foods.

The AHA noted its ongoing initiatives, including Health Care by Food and the Periodic Table of Food programs, which aim to improve understanding of the role of healthy food in preventing and managing chronic disease. The AHA also announced it will issue updated dietary guidance later this year, building on the new federal guidelines and its own science-first approach.
