The American Heart Association announced that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, is the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal and one of the world’s leading scientific publications in cardiovascular medicine. Effective with today’s issue, Maron will shape the journal’s editorial direction and continue its commitment to publishing rigorous, practice-changing science for clinicians, researchers and healthcare professionals worldwide.
Maron is a board-certified clinical cardiologist and distinguished researcher across the basic, translational, clinical and population health spectrum. He is recognized globally for mechanistic and clinical advances in pulmonary hypertension, right heart failure and cardiomyopathy. His career bridges patient care, translational science and precision medicine, focused on pulmonary vascular disease, specifically how conditions that affect the blood vessels within the lungs impact the heart. Maron is senior associate dean for precision medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Melvin Sharovsky Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, as well as co-executive director of the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing in Bethesda, Maryland. He previously held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and also served as a visiting professor of medicine at Imperial College London.
Maron succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who has led Circulation since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who was Circulation’s editor-in-chief from 2004-2016. “Dr. Maron’s appointment as the next editor in chief of Circulation underscores the American Heart Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science shaping the future of cardiovascular medicine,” said Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee, which selected Dr. Maron to lead the editorial content of Circulation. Each of the Association’s scientific journals is editorially independent of one another, and they are also editorially independent of the Association in support of open dialogue and discourse, which are essential to the dynamic nature of scientific discovery and advances. “His vision, scientific breadth and dedication to robust research and innovation position Circulation for optimal success in its next chapter of influence and impact.”

Top new features of Circulation will include: a new Clinician Lighthouse article for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic test results and patient management; a new Clinician’s Corner with clinician-oriented content guiding readers through key decision-making and real world clinical practice; key clinical trials and guideline manuscripts supported by perspective bundles; graphic abstracts for all research articles, central illustrations for most invited papers, and video commentaries for select manuscripts; a streamlined and strengthened manuscript submission process with an accelerated and more transparent review timeline; a new Patient’s Corner article for the public/patient community; and expanded, weekly eTOC alerts including brief summaries of articles. Several additional upgrades for readers will roll-out in the first year.
Dr. Maron is joined by a new Circulation editorial team including Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA. In addition, 10 renowned specialists are now deputy editors for specific topic sections, including Fundamental Sciences, Translational Science, Clinical Cardiology, Clinical Trials, Community Health, Population Health, Global Cardiovascular Health, and AI for Process and Science. Circulation will also be supported by a team of 27 associate editors and guest editors.
Maron earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Williams College and a doctor of medicine degree from Brown University School of Medicine. His scientific impact includes co-authoring more than 260 scientific publications, serving as primary investigator for federally funded research programs for more than two decades, discovering novel molecular mechanisms of vascular fibrosis, and leading projects that clarified clinical risk and resilience in pulmonary hypertension. Maron is a global leader in the basic mechanisms of pulmonary vascular remodeling and precision medicine, with six patents, inventions and copyrights confirmed or pending. He also brings substantial editorial and professional leadership experience, including prior reviewer and editor roles with multiple cardiovascular and respiratory journals.
Circulation is the flagship peer-reviewed journal of the American Heart portfolio of 14 peer-reviewed scientific journals.
