AI Shopping Assistants Can't Read Any of 24 DTC Brands, Firon Marketing Audit Finds

AI Shopping Assistants Can't Read Any of 24 DTC Brands, Firon Marketing Audit Finds

Firon Marketing, a Generative Engine Optimization agency specializing in direct-to-consumer and Shopify Plus brands, has released the second phase of its AI Readiness Audit, and the findings expose a systemic failure across the DTC landscape. The study examined 24 established brands in apparel, skincare, supplements, home goods, food and beverage, and baby and family products. Not a single brand carried the complete set of structured data signals that AI assistants rely on to source and verify product recommendations.

The audit measured three critical signals: FAQPage schema, which allows AI systems to extract a brand's own answers to customer questions; Organization schema with a sameAs property, which provides a verified path to cross-reference a brand against its social profiles and press coverage; and Product schema with an AggregateRating value, which supplies the price, availability, and review data AI shopping surfaces use to rank products. Zero brands had all three. Zero brands had even one of the three on every audited page. Additionally, two brands carried Organization schema but left the sameAs property empty, meaning AI systems could see a company existed but could not verify which company it was. No brand published FAQ schema, despite several running visible question-and-answer sections in plain text on their homepages.

Page speed failures were equally universal. Of the 22 brands with measurable lab data, every one failed Google's 2.5-second Largest Contentful Paint threshold. The average LCP across the sample was 17.4 seconds, with the slowest homepage recorded at 54.51 seconds. In the August batch, average Total Blocking Time reached 13.9 seconds against a 0.2-second standard, and the average homepage transferred 26.5 megabytes. Every brand loaded at least 25 third-party scripts, and three loaded more than 80. Twenty-three of 24 brands had a missing or duplicated H1 tag.

These technical deficiencies have profound implications. AI assistants do not browse websites the way shoppers do; they parse structured data to decide which brands are verifiable enough to name. As Alex Jordan, Founder and CEO of Firon Marketing, explained, "A brand with no schema is not losing that comparison. It was never entered into it." The gap is structural, not competitive. Because no brand in the sample has the signals, the category has no leader in AI recommendation. The first brands to publish complete structured data stand to capture citation share across an entire vertical before competitors recognize the shift.
