The DFW Car & Toy Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, has added a 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT to its collection, showcasing a well-preserved example of one of America's few mid-engine production cars. The vehicle, part of The Ron Sturgeon Collection, features just 60,000 original miles and a factory red finish, embodying the spirit of 1980s performance innovation.
Introduced by Pontiac as an affordable, sporty coupe, the Fiero GT was a bold departure from conventional American car design. Its mid-engine layout, a rarity among domestic automakers at the time, provided balanced handling and a driving experience reminiscent of exotic sports cars. Power comes from a 2.8-liter L44 V6 engine producing 130 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque, paired with a three-speed automatic transaxle that drives the rear wheels.
The car's design features pop-up headlights, a vented engine lid, asymmetrical quarter-panel vent, rear spoiler, fog lights, and a removable sunroof. It also includes power-assisted disc brakes on all four corners. Inside, the cabin offers power windows, a Pioneer head unit, headrest speakers, and a driver-focused gauge cluster with an 85-mph speedometer and 6,500-rpm tachometer, along with auxiliary gauges.
Ron Sturgeon, founder of the museum, noted, "The Fiero GT has always been an automotive outlier, and that's exactly why I love it. It's mid-engine, American, sporty, and full of character—and this one is about as clean as you'll find." The vehicle was first registered in Alaska and Indiana before being acquired by its current owner in 2014.
The Fiero's production run was brief, but it left a lasting impact on automotive enthusiasts. This low-mileage 1985 GT offers a rare opportunity to see a well-preserved, nearly original example of a car that dared to be different.
