The 1967 Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia Campmobile, part of the Ron Sturgeon Collection at the DFW Car & Toy Museum, evokes the golden era of road trips with its pop-top roof, Birch plywood interior, and vintage camping gear. This particular SO42 edition, restored with care, is not just a museum piece but a functional vehicle that captures the spirit of adventure.
Under the rear deck lies a 1.6-liter flat-four engine paired with a four-speed manual transaxle, encouraging the slow-paced travel that made these vans iconic. The camper features a pop-up fiberglass roof for extra headroom, louvered vent windows, and a wood roof rack. For modern practicality, the steering column was replaced in 2024, and the wiring for lights and signals has been updated, making the van road-ready.
Inside, the Birch plywood cabinetry includes a kitchenette, folding table, spice rack, water pump, and ice box. Tan-patterned cloth and beige vinyl upholstery provide vintage comfort, while a children's hammock offers additional sleeping space. The exterior electrical hookup, camp-side awning, picnic set, and vintage Coleman stove complete the authentic camping experience.
Ron Sturgeon, founder of the DFW Car & Toy Museum, noted the cultural significance of these vehicles. "They're not about getting somewhere fast—they're about taking the long way and making memories along the route," he said. The museum, now located at 2550 McMillan Parkway in Fort Worth, houses over 200 collectible vehicles and 3,000 toys and artifacts. Admission is free, and the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday.
