Michael J. Sacks Honored with Prestigious Burnham Award for Leadership

Michael J. Sacks, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GCM Grosvenor, has been named the 35th recipient of the Daniel H. Burnham Award for Distinguished Leadership, according to the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce. This prestigious award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Chicago business and civic community, will be presented to Sacks at the 35th Annual Daniel H. Burnham Award Dinner on November 18, 2026.

Sacks has been at the helm of GCM Grosvenor, a global alternative asset management firm, since 1994. Under his leadership, the firm has grown significantly, managing $97 billion for a diverse global client base. His tenure at GCM Grosvenor has been marked by innovative strategies and a commitment to civic involvement, aligning with the vision of the award's namesake, Daniel H. Burnham, a renowned urban planner.

Beyond his corporate achievements, Sacks has played a pivotal role in Chicago's economic development. From 2011 to 2019, he served as Vice-Chairman of World Business Chicago under Mayor Rahm Emanuel. During this period, he was instrumental in developing Chicago's Plan for Economic Growth and Jobs and launching initiatives like the Digital Manufacturing Design Lab and the Greater Chatham Initiative. These efforts have significantly bolstered economic opportunities in Chicago, particularly on the city's south side.

Sacks's commitment to educational equity is equally noteworthy. He has been a member of the Northwestern University Board of Trustees for 16 years and, along with his wife, established the Sacks Family Scholarship Fund. This initiative provides "no loan" scholarships to Chicago Public Schools students attending Northwestern University, benefiting 259 students, including 162 from CPS. Additionally, his partnership with Northwestern Medicine led to the creation of the GCM Grosvenor Discovery Program, which offers career and technical education to CPS high school students, paving pathways to careers in the medical field. To date, 796 students have participated in these programs.

Michael J. Sacks's recognition with the Daniel H. Burnham Award underscores his profound impact on Chicago's business landscape and his dedication to fostering educational opportunities and economic growth within the community. His leadership exemplifies the award's spirit, celebrating those who contribute to making Chicago a thriving hub for business and culture.
