The City of Aurora has unveiled its proposed budget for 2027, emphasizing a commitment to infrastructure improvements, public safety, and fiscal responsibility. According to the City News Articles, the proposed budget is set at $603,696,865, marking a significant reduction of $84,736,709 from the previous fiscal year. This reduction aims to decrease reliance on one-time funding stopgaps and align ongoing expenses with sustainable revenues.
Public Safety and Infrastructure
Public safety remains a top priority, with the Police and Fire Departments seeing budget increases of 6.84% and 7.80%, respectively. This funding will help partially restore the Police Department’s Cadet Program and enhance the Police Social Work Program. Additionally, the Fire Department will reinstate a battalion chief position, retain an additional reserve fire engine, and upgrade equipment for the hazardous materials team. Notably, the Fire Department has improved response times significantly, with a 25% reduction in Station 9’s district and over 19% in Station 13’s district.
Infrastructure improvements are also a focus, with $9.8 million allocated for the lead service line replacement program and $7.35 million for water main evaluation, repair, and replacement. These initiatives aim to strengthen the Water and Sewer Fund, reduce pressure on residents’ water bills, and comply with federal mandates regarding lead service line replacements. Furthermore, the budget includes $7.35 million for resurfacing approximately 35 lane-miles of neighborhood streets and $3.5 million for arterial and collector roads. The long-awaited Orchard Road Sound Wall project and downtown street conversions are also scheduled for 2027.
Downtown Development and Economic Initiatives
Downtown Aurora will see continued development, with funding allocated to improve parking access as the area enhances programming through events, the Paramount Theatre, and RiverEdge Park. The Aurora Civic Center Authority, benefiting from over 41,000 subscriptions to the Paramount Theatre’s Broadway Series in 2026, will receive a $1.5 million payment to support financial sustainability.
The proposed budget also focuses on economic growth through energy-efficient housing, small business development, historic preservation, and neighborhood beautification. A revolving loan program will offer low-interest loans to small business owners for code compliance and energy-efficient housing projects, assisting residents in historic preservation efforts.
Overall, Aurora’s 2027 budget reflects a strategic approach to enhancing public safety, infrastructure, and economic development, while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
